fascinating true story of Randy Kearse who wrote a prisoner’s dictionary of slang while himself in the joint. I just checked the University of Guelph and it doesn’t have any listings; the Toronto Public library has several but they are on order.
When I was studying English one of my TAs was doing his thesis on prison literature. I have often thought about that. One of the more interesting songs about being in prison is CCR’s rendition of “the midnight special”, a song about a train (of freedom?) riding by your cell window each night at midnight.
could name lotsa movies that fit the bill. but the point is, what effect do these have? in post-modern terms, we are all prisoners to some degree. so liberation is a powerful theme, from christian writing on down. just think: shawshank redemption, if you don’t believe me. good ol’ stephen king
