Very nice use of Ajax technology: Google personalized homepage. The REALLY cool thing is you can drag and reposition the units of info (email block, headlines block, how-to tip block, etc.).

Tell me Google isn’t about to take over the Internet world…

oh and don’t miss Google bookmarks. Using this, you can maintain your bookmarks no matter what browser you use or what computer you are on!

Lenghty but clear article on the semantic web.

Did you know that Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison and Cobain all died at the age of 27? And if you did, who died first?

JIMI HENDRIX, 27 yrs., Sept. 18, 1970
JANIS JOPLIN, 27 yrs., Oct. 3, 1970 (one month later!)
JIM MORRISON, 27 yrs., July 3, 1971
KURT COBAIN, 27 yrs., April 5, 1994

If you don’t believe, check the statistical bunching around the age of 27

thanks for this to the conversation I walked into between Mark and Emma

Ever since I was a kid I heard about what a legend Jimi Hendrix was. Then, growing up, the power of his band hit me like a bag of sand somewhere around grade ten (it was the song “Fire” with the indomitable drum beat and soul-searing guitar riffs). In my traveling days, one of the more colorful personalities I met was convinced that “Hendrix was from Mars”. Well, that line of typecasting was beyond me at the time: sure, Hendrix was cool. But from *Mars*? Was he really so different?

Since I have been living on my own this summer, I took up the guitar again. I haven’t played seriously since I was an undergrad–except for one wedding I did in Japan which I practiced a lot for. And so I have been thinking more and more about good and interesting guitarists. I’m not interested in electric guitar unless there is some captivating motive behind it: playing music is one thing; obligatory guitar solos is another.

Before I finish with my reasons as to why Hendrix is from Mars there is one other difference to note: Hendrix was all about the “experience”. The “Jimi Hendrix Experience” was, admittedly, pretentious but also beautiful: it is about transcending what you know and particularly what you did in the past.

There is a story that Jim Morrison once attended a Hendrix show and clambored to get on stage and jam with him (the “two Jimi’s”). Morrison was persistent about getting up on stage and called out, “Hey, Jimi–it’s me: Jim MORRISON!”. And Hendrix supposedly replied, “Well, I’m Jimi HENDRIX.” And that was that: it was his show, his experience.
