On Jason’s blog I came across his “statement of intent” to enter our LIS program yesterday and thought it was a great idea to post. it is well over my half-way point through the program but it is still timely since I finish next month. endings are bitter-sweet, right? so without adieu, here is my “statement of intent” when applying to enter the library and information science program.

I finally learned the true value of a decent English library only when, ironically, I could not get to one. It took my experience living in a non-English country—Japan—to realize the importance of both a reference section and a librarian’s help. While Japan has abundant libraries, the selection of English books is limited. Further, the university libraries available are not “browser-friendly”—meaning, the books are kept in the professors’ office area and one must obtain permission to enter and look for specific titles; one does not just walk around, browsing as one pleases. So the lack of a quality reference section these past six years has impressed upon me its importance, firstly, and sparked my desire to learn how to create and maintain one, secondly. Pursuing a Masters in Library Sciences is how I wish to realize this goal.
